Welcome to Rabbit Class
Welcome to Rabbit Class. We are Year 1 children (5-6 years). There are 16 children in our class and our teacher is Miss Hodgson who is helped by our teaching assistant Miss Slater. We are taught in a ‘pod’ with Hedgehog Class (Year 2) so we also work with Mrs Horrocks and Mrs Rushforth.
We have just moved into Key Stage 1 and are looking forward to the challenges ahead. We have the Year 1 Phonics Screening at the end of this year.
To find out what we will be doing this year, take a look at the Our Curriculum section of our website. To help us with our spelling and reading, take a look at the phonics and reading section of our website.
Spring Term 1
Welcome back! We hope that everyone had a lovely Christmas and New Year? It is lovely to see everyone back in school.
This term in Phonics, we will be continuing looking at alternative graphemes for the sounds we are already know. We have made a start on this by looking at the oo sound and have found that there are lots of different ways of writing this sound. We are doing a fantastic job at spotting our alternative graphemes when we read sentences or words and we are becoming familiar with the sounds they make.
In Story Mapping, we have some gorgeous books to look at this term. We started with “After the Fall”- a twist on the tale of Humpty Dumpty and the children loved the surprise ending. We used this book as a stimulus to learn about recipes and then wrote our own recipe for scrambled eggs. Of course, we had to make scrambled eggs first so that we could plan our writing! Following “After the Fall”, we are going to be looking at the book – “The Night Gardener” which I am sure that the children will love. Towards the end of the term we are going to be working with a poem – At the Zoo and the children will be writing their own poem. We then have a Literacy Shed unit called “Marshmallows” where we will be making inferences and predictions.
In Maths we have just finished our unit on tens and ones and counting on from numbers. We are moving into a new unit – Addition and Subtraction within 20 and we will cover number bonds and number facts. We will look at if we know that 2+4 = 6, we also know that 12+4 = 16. We will also cover how we can make number bonds to 20 by focusing on our number bonds to 10.
In Maths Basic Skills, we have just started to look at adding and subtracting 3, 4 and 5.
This term we have a Geography focus in the afternoons and the children are looking at the United Kingdom. They will be learning about the countries of the United Kingdom and the capital cities. They will also be focusing on the weather and the seasons.
In Science, the children will be focusing on chemistry. Last term the children learnt all about different materials, their properties and their uses. This term, they will be looking at how / if materials can change. This will include some experimentation with heating and cooling to see the differences in the materials used.
In PE this term the focus is on dance and in Computing we are using Spreadsheets to calculate amounts. In RE we continue looking at Christianity with a focus on Belonging and how Christians show that they belong. This ties in with the PSHE unit on Belonging too.
Autumn Term 2
Welcome back to school. We hope that everyone had a lovely, restful holiday!
This term, we have started looking at alternative graphemes for the sounds we already know, for example we have started looking at /ai/ this week and so far we have learnt that this sound can be represented by /ay/, /a_e/, /a/, /ey/, /eigh/, /ea/ and also /ei/.
In Story Mapping we have started looking at the lovely book – The Witch’s Cat and the Cooking Catastrophe. We are looking forward to further work on this story. We will also be looking at The Bear and The Piano and a poem called The Wind.
In Maths we started looking at addition and subtraction before the holidays and we will continue looking at this. We have been learning about number bonds and fact families too. In Maths Basic Skills we will be looking at adding 10.
In the afternoons, we will begin looking at History and discovering how our local area has changed. In Science we have made a start on Materials and we will be looking at their properties over the coming weeks.
We have a very busy term planned!
Autumn Term 1
We settled into our new class and routines really quickly.
This term we are recapping our Phase 3 phonic sounds, while practising reading Phase 4 words – words such as plug, tent and damp. We are also going to be practising our polysyllabic words such as raindrop and market.
In Story Mapping we are going to be looking at the stories – Ruby’s Worry, Last and Lights On Cotton Rock. We will also be looking at the video clip – The Girl With The Yellow Bag.
In Maths we are going to be looking at place value and focusing on numbers to 10. In Maths Basic Skills, we will be looking at adding and subtracting 0, 1 and 2.
In the afternoons, we will be joining with our Year 2 classmates and studying Geography and looking at our local area. We will be doing PE on a Tuesday afternoon. In art, we are studying the artist Jackson Pollock. In Science, we will be looking at animals and living things. On Fridays we will study PSHE, Music, Computing, RE and we will have another session with the PE coach.
At the end of Autumn Term 1, we had a Phonics Stay and Play and invited our parents in. It was lovely to see so many parents attending and I think they were all very impressed with our phonic skills!
