Welcome to Fox Class
We are Year 5 children (aged 9-10 years) and there are 12 children in our class. Our class teacher is Miss Jarvis who is currently covering maternity leave for Mrs Williams. We are taught in a ‘pod’ with Badger Class (Year 6) so we also work with Miss Plummer and Mrs Palmer.
To find out what we will be doing this year, take a look at the Our Curriculum section of our website. To help us with our spelling and reading, take a look at the phonics and reading section of our website. As we get older, we access the internet more and school wants us to stay safe online. To find out how you can support us in staying safe online, check out the Online Safety section of our website.
Spring Term 1:
In English, in our Spring Term, we are reading Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Mopurgo. We have explored different pieces of writing inspired by this book including Japanese poetry, backwards poetry and writing a ships log.
We visited the Baltic in Newcastle Upon Tyne and then went around the city of Newcastle to view some street art as part of our art topic Street art vs. Pop art. We have been looking at the meanings behind art work during this topic and the children really enjoyed looking at the art and trying to work this out for themselves.
In Geography, we are currently learning all about the Arctic and comparing that to life here in the U.K.. R.E. this term is a focus on the environment and specifically how and why we care about the environment. In this topic, we are exploring the views held by the 6 major religions about why we should care about the environment and our responsibility as global citizens. We have moved on in French to our new topic of J’Habite which is all about where the children live. The new topic in Science focuses on evolution, so the children are learning about the theory and are enjoying watching species transform.
Autumn Term 2:
This term we have some exciting and fun activities planned. In English, we are still covering the wonderful book; Brightstorm by Vashti Hardy. The children are really enjoying following the adventures of Maudie and Arthur. We will then be looking at some classic poetry by Edgar Allen Poe.
We had Brandon Youth Club come in to lead a full well being day. The children really enjoyed the day learning about self esteem, bullying and anxiety – all important topics in today’s world. The children particularly loved creating flowers and having their classmates write positive things about them on each petal.
During this term, we are also learning about the religion of Islam. We are lucky enough to be doing an online workshop learning all about this religion. This is will really help us with our R.E. topic (What can we learn about a local Islamic community?) and our History topic (Early Islamic Civilisations).
In Science, things are starting to get a bit gory as we learn all about the inner workings of the circulatory system. Fun activities are planned such as making our own blood (out of household items), testing the power of a heart (again out of household items) and conducting science investigations related to exercise that the children will have planned for themselves.
This term is our Christmas term, so as we near to Christmas time we will be spending some time developing some interesting Christmas design technology items. We will also incorporate some fun Christmas related activities into our French ‘Les Vetements’ topic.
Autumn Term 1:
This term we have some fabulous experiences planned for the children such a visit to Souter Lighthouse and Marsden Rock, this will help bring our geography topic to life (What happens when the land meets the sea?). Some of the children will be taking part in a residential visit to Weardale, working on risk taking and resilience. In Science , we will be looking into the work of Nikola Tesla and exploring his contributions to the development of electricity. In PE we are all looking forward to returning to swimming this term and developing our skills with a coach on Fantastic Fridays.
